The Evaluation Process

what to expect

Initial Steps

Initial Consultation is the first step in the psychoeducational evaluation process

Contact me to schedule a free consultation. Based on our conversation and your child’s needs, I will provide a written proposal for your review and agreement.

Interviews, Rating Scales, and Questionnaires

Information gathering, records review, step two of the psychoeducational evaluation process

Once we have agreed on an assessment plan, follow-up paperwork and interviews will be requested. I will provide you with rating scales and questionnaires to gain information from you about your child. I may request that you sign a document consenting to my communication with your child’s teachers and service providers. I may ask you to provide report cards and other relevant documents.

Observation

Observation is the third step in the psychoeducational evaluation process

I may observe your child at school or in the settings in which you are concerned. Observations can provide information about your child’s academic engagement, social interactions, work stamina, independence, and identify behaviors interfering with learning.

Testing

Interpretation of the Results

We will schedule one or more in-person testing sessions. Testing can take place in your home or in my office. The length of testing sessions depend on your child’s age, testing style, and the reasoning for testing. Sessions typically range in length from 2 to 4 hours. In-person testing may be completed in one session or across multiple sessions depending on your child’s needs and the reason for evaluation.

Interpretation and Results

I will interpret the information collected; answer referral questions; compare your child’s results to diagnostic criteria and special education eligibility; and make recommendations to address your child’s needs. This information will be written as a comprehensive report.

Consultation

Consultation with parents and recommendations for support

I will meet with you to discuss assessment results and answer your questions.
